An early use of a core drill to check if it was worthwhile to open a quarry on a site. Before use of the drill came into operation, it was pretty often just educated guesswork where to site a new quarry.

This quarry site, located across Trout Creek from Emerald, is not completely filled in.

Not much left, this portion is mostly filled in.

There are a couple of railroad boxcars in the photo, placed there for loading of roofing slates (most likely).
